In 2006, BYD built the first electric vehicle charging station in Shenzhen headquarters.

In 2008, the first centralized charging station in China was built during the Beijing Olympic Games, which can meet the power battery charging needs of 50 pure electric buses.

In October 2009, Shanghai Electric Power Company invested to build Shanghai Caoxi Electric Vehicle Charging Station, which is the first electric vehicle charging station with commercial operation function in China. At the end of 2009, Beijing Shouke Group completed the first domestic Beijing pure electric passenger vehicle demonstration charging station with a complete intelligent micro network in Jianxiangqiao.

On December 31, 2009, the first batch of electric vehicle charging stations (piles) put into operation by China Southern Power Grid was completed and put into operation in Shenzhen, with a construction scale of 2 charging stations and 134 charging piles (plugs).

On March 31, 2010, Tangshan Nanhu Charging Station of State Grid Corporation of China was completed and put into operation. It is the first charging station with typical design of State Grid in China. It can charge 10 electric vehicles in two ways: fast charging and slow charging.

By the end of 2019, the number of charging posts in China had exceeded 1.2 million.

On April 14, 2020, the State Grid launched the first batch of 126 charging pile projects. In 2020, it plans to invest 2.7 billion yuan in charging pile projects, distributed in 24 provinces (cities) including Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, covering public, private, logistics, sanitation, community and port shore power. Among them, there are 53,000 charging piles in residential areas, 18,000 public charging piles and 7000 special charging piles, which will help to make up for the shortcomings of industries such as difficult charging in residential areas and insufficient platform connectivity.

By the end of June 2020, the number of charging piles of all kinds in China has reached 1.322 million, including 558000 public charging piles, ranking first in the world.

As of September 2020, China has built 42000 charging stations, 525 switching stations, 1.42 million charging piles and a vehicle to pile ratio of 3.1:1. China has built the world's largest charging network (On November 3, 2020, the Information Office of the State Council held a regular briefing on the policies of the State Council).

As of March 2021, member units in the Alliance have reported about 851000 public charging piles, including 355000 DC charging piles, 495000 AC charging piles and 481 AC/DC integrated charging piles. [5]

On April 26, 2022, Zhou Rongfeng, deputy director of the Road Bureau of the Ministry of Transport, said that 3102 expressway service areas across the country have built charging and changing infrastructure, and about 13,374 charging piles have been built. [9]

On October 11, 2022, the China Charging Alliance released the operation of public charging infrastructure. In September 2022, the number of public charging piles increased by 12000 compared with that in August, with a year-on-year growth of 56.6%. By September 2022, member units in the Alliance had reported 1.636 million public charging piles, including 704000 DC charging piles and 931000 AC charging piles. From October 2021 to September 2022, about 49000 new public charging piles will be added each month. Top 10 regions in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Beijing, Hubei, Shandong, Anhui, Henan and Fujian have constructed 71.5% of the public charging piles.
